Clothes to Wear while Traveling

We’ve all seen it – the woman teetering through the airport on stiletto heels, the man struggling to untie laces as the ever-growing line of passengers waiting to go through security watches on. What you wear when you travel can have a serious impact on your experience, whether it’s on the plane or at your destination.

Here are a few tips to help you make sure your wardrobe is travel-ready in time for your next trip:

Airport/Airplane

As tempting as it may be to throw on shorts when you head to the airport on the way to your beach vacation, it’s important to recognize that bare legs might not be practical on a temperature-controlled airplane. Wear light layers, and if your destination’s temperature is very different from your starting point, bring another outfit in carry-on – this way, you can be comfortable through the whole trip, and if your bag somehow doesn’t make the flight, you have at least one day of clothes with you.

Shoes are also important – slip-ons are best for security lines and long flights, as they’re easiest to remove and keep pressure off of your feet and ankles, which can get irritated on long trips. If you prefer to wear them without socks, find a spot in your carry-on for socks anyways. They may come in handy during travel.

2. Recognize Custom

You might want to pack all your favorite pieces when you head out of town, but before you pack, make sure you do a little research about your destination. In many parts of the world, showing arms and legs (even in extreme heat) is inappropriate. Be extra careful if you’re planning to visit a religious site while you travel – they may have more stringent standards than the country you’re in. With just a quick online search, you can make sure you know the basic customs of the place you’re visiting, and be a more prepared and respectful guest in that country.

3. Travel Light

No one wants to lug a heavy suitcase through an airport and around the world, but it can be easy to get carried away when packing, and take more than you need. Making a list of the activities you plan to do and what type of outfits you’ll need for them can help you cut down on the items you bring. In most places, laundry is an option, so if you can wear certain items for multiple occasions, bring them. Versatility is key – when you’re traveling, sticking to classic items that mix well rather than statement items, which are hard to match with other clothes, can help you keep your suitcase light. Plus if you have space in your luggage you end up with the added benefit of being able to purchase some local clothing at your destination!
