*Momos. These savory little dumplings from Nepal and northern India are often accompanied by a fiery, tomato based dipping sauce.  The outer shell of this treat is typically made with a mixture of flour and water. Meat of some sort is the traditional stuffing for these treats but modern incarnations may instead include cheese, vegetables, or a combination of all three fillings. In any case, momos make a great snack after a long morning or afternoon of sightseeing.

*Biryani. This traditional rice dish generally contains a great many Indian spices and the higher quality version often include saffron. Historically, this entree was made with long grain, brown rice but that may not always be the case today as basmati rice has become more popular base. Marinated meats such as chicken, lamb, and fish are typically featured in this dish but vegetarian versions do also exist. Chopped vegetables may also be included. Biryani makes a good meal for a group of people but solo travelers can always save their leftovers for later.

*Jalebi. Sort of like an Indian doughnut, this confection has a history that dates back to 10th century. In modern times, wheat flour and water are blended together and then cooked into circular shapes. The confection is then soaked in sugar syrup for an even tastier flavor. Lime juice and rose water are other popular flavorings for these chewy treats. Be sure to get them while they’re hot!

*Dosas. Despite the fact that dosas have existed since the 1st century AD, these treats have evolved to become thinner and crunchier as the years have rolled past. As it now stands, these thin pancakes are traditionally made from a mixture of group up rice and black lentils that have been soaked in water for some time before being fried. They are generally served with a variety of sauces, chutneys, and pickles to enhance their flavors. Although dosas commonly make an appearance on local breakfast tables, street vendors can also been found serving up these yummy treats at all hours.
