London Cheap Eats: European Style

As any experienced traveler knows, just paying for a room in London can take a nice chunk out of your travel budget. Of course, there are all the obligatory sites that each cost about $30 per adult and a skyrocketing exchange rate to keep things on the up and up. Even with the helpful London Pass and Oyster Card in your pocket, the prices in this town can quickly consume a chunk of change. But, what if your busy schedule doesn’t allow you to make your own lunch and you’re getting tired of granola bars? Isn’t there any place you can have a nice lunch or dinner without breaking the bank? Not too worry! Here are three great places in London for European style cuisine at affordable prices.

Franco Manca: Here a basic but nicely sized pizza with a fluffy sourdough crust will only set travelers back £4.50 ($6.35 USD). Additional toppings can of course be added for a pricier pie. These affordable pizzas are made from fresh, wholesome ingredients and the fact is reflected in their delicious taste. This place is located in a small building so be prepared to wait in line, especially at peak hours. The restaurant can also be a trifle chilly, so visitors will definitely want to keep their coats on during the winter months. It can be found at 4 Market Row on Electric Lane near the Brixton metro stop.

Herman Ze German: As one of their wall signs so aptly puts it: “ow wurst is the ze best.” Tasty, filling, and affordable, what more could you ask for? This local hotdog chain has locations in Soho, Fitzrovia, and Convent Garden where the bockwurst starts at a cool £4.45 ($6.30 USD). While this is clearly not a fancy place, visitors are sure to overlook the fact when they’re served up bubbling hot cheese and freshly sautéed veggies to top of their meals. The chips served up here are also a customer favorite. Travelers can additionally get spicy curry mustard on their sausage/hotdog for 50 pence (71 cents) more but some have mention that it’s a bit too sweet for their tastes. However, finding a place to sit can be difficult because the restaurant is on the small side and it is often crowded with hungry diners.

However, if that doesn’t appeal to your taste buds, it’s good to know that most of their lunch menu items come under £10. ($14.10 USD) and lunch last until 3 pm. Breakfast items are also available all day. For those with a little more cash to spare and large appetites the rotating 3 course set menu offered on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays is considered a good bargain as well. The eatery can be found at 93 Golbrone Road in Kensal Town near the Ladbroke Grove metro stop.
