The Affordable American West

Visiting Thailand to sample the delicious local dishes or hopping over to Europe in search of artistic inspiration might be your dream vacation but perhaps your budget is calling for something more affordable. However, there’s no reason to avoid traveling altogether. Reasonably priced fares can often be found for places that don’t require a long flight. Therefore, the United States’ West Coast makes a good alternate destination choice for many North Americans. With that in mind, here are some excellent cities that you might want to investigate further.

San Francisco, California. Aside from it’s many downtown attractions such as the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco is also conveniently located near the Napa Valley region, making it a grape (ha, ha) home base for wine lovers in the area. According to Travel + Leisure, this city is at its most affordable the week before Thanksgiving in November but it remains a good destination for the rest of the year. Price of Travel reports that most  travelers can safely get by on a daily budget of $87 per person, provided they take advantage of some of the numerous freebies that are available for city visitors. However, hotel rooms and major attractions in San Francisco can be on the pricey side of things so you definitely want to take into account your spending habits and budget accordingly.

Honolulu, Hawaii. There’s rarely a time when tropical beaches don’t sound appealing and Honolulu has the weather to keep visitors coming year round. February is the month to go because there is a significant drop in hotel prices the week before Valentines’ Day, making this spot even more affordable. A traveler can nonetheless get by with around $75 per day if they are careful with their money. The beaches tend to appeal to budget travelers but there are other reasonably priced activities to be found in this spot. However, airfares tend out to the islands tend to be bit higher here than to some of the other destinations on this list, so keep that in mind when making your plans.

Los Angeles, California. Renowned for its glitz, this star-studded town is definitely the place to see and be seen. Travelers will probably want to check out popular spots like the Hollywood sign, the Walk of Fame, and the Broad Museum which features free exhibits by famous artists. Thanks to the recently improved public transportation system in town, you’ll be on your way to your chosen sites in no time at all. Travel + Leisure even reports that hotel prices in this town are at their cheapest in January, a fact that certainly makes Los Angeles a prime option for a winter getaway. A daily base rate of around $80 per person is all travelers will need to take care of everything but those looking to party hard may naturally want to take some extra cash with them.

As always, happy travels!
