The Best Warm Destinations to Escape the Cold

As the holidays come to a close and the weather gets even colder, you may be considering getting away for a vacation. Whether you’ve remembered you have some vacation time you haven’t yet used, or you feel the need to get away for a long weekend, these are the best warm destinations to escape the cold this winter:

Costa Rica

While many assume that Costa Rica is all about lush rainforests, abundant wildlife and unspoiled beaches, this is only the tip of the iceberg. For those who like to get active, you’ll be able to go zip-lining through rainforests, hike active volcanoes and even surf in warm, clear waters- all in just a few days. Costa Ricans are known to be easygoing and welcoming, and you’ll be able to get around with your high school Spanish since many people in the tourist spots speak English and there are English signs in many places as well.

Bora Bora

Bora Bora is only 2 miles wide and 6 miles long, but it’s brimming with beauty. With dormant volcanoes rising up in the centre and jungle spilling into a warm aquamarine lagoon, Bora Bora is known as one of the most beautiful islands in the world- named “The Pearl of the Pacific” by James Cook.

Tourism is the main industry on this French Polynesian island, and for those who like snorkelling and scuba diving and relaxing on the beach, Bora Bora is the place to go.

Playa del Carmen

Popular with both expats and tourists, Playa del Carmen is an excellent place to soak up the sun. With a bustling main street full of bars and restaurants, great beaches and plenty of cheap accommodation options, you’ll find that the time flies here. If you have a few days to kill, take the ferry to Cozumel and be sure to enjoy some of the best scuba diving in the world or simply lounge by the pool at an all-inclusive resort.

St. Martin

While many people associate the Caribbean with a relaxed and quiet atmosphere, a quiet beach and laid-back life, they probably haven’t been to St. Martin or St Maarten. The best part about visiting this island is that you get to experience to distinct cultures while on one vacation. The north side of the island is controlled by the French, and is where you’ll find some of the best restaurants and beaches, while the south of the island- St Maarten is where you can truly party with the best casinos, clubs, and bars.

Puerto Rico

Located less than 3 hours from Miami, Puerto Rico is a territory of the US, however it’s in no way a “little America”. You’ll be able to take a walk back in time in El Morro, explore the jungle in El Yunque and maybe even find some quiet time in the gorgeous islands of Culebra and Vienques. Puerto Rico is also budget-friendly, with an exciting nightlife in San Juan and plenty of white sand beaches where you can escape days of shovelling snow.
