Travelling With Pets

One challenge many people face when planning a trip is figuring how to make sure their pets are safe and well cared for while their owners are out of town. Finding a reliable kennel or a friend that is willing to pet sit isn’t always easy, and can add a layer of stress to what would otherwise be a wonderful trip.

Luckily, times are changing. For those of you who would rather not leave Fido or Fluffy at home on your next trip, it is becoming easier to find airlines, hotels and cities that welcome your furry friends.

If you’re looking for a getaway that includes your entire family, these hotels not only allow pets, but go the extra mile in making sure your dog or cat is welcomed. Bonus: they treat humans really well, too.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort: Coronado, California

If you and you pup can’t get enough of the ocean, this is the spot for you. Located in sunny Coronado, California, on one of the top rated beaches in the US, this hotel offers a pet bowl and treat upon check-in, as well as room service for your cat or dog. If you want to explore beyond the sandy seaside, visit in April for the Coronado Flower Show, which began in 1925, or in July to catch the Coronado Island Sports Fiesta, where aqua-sports dominate. And if your dog wants to get in on the action, Coronado and Loews run a doggy surfing contest complete with prized and masseuses each June – the summer of 2015 will be the tenth year of the competition.

Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch: Avon, Colorado

If you and your dog prefer mountains to oceans, this hotel located in the midst of the Rockies is perfect for you. Dogs are greeted with treats, toys and a guide to local dog-friendly spots. There are special events on Fridays, doggy massages, and a well-stocked gift shop with plenty of pet-related gear for the special pooch in your life. And for humans, Bachelor Gulch offers ski-in and ski-out access to some of Vail’s greatest slopes, high-quality golfing and dining at Spago, Wolfgang Puck’s famous restaurant.

XV Beacon: Boston, Massachusetts

If you’re more into urban travel, XV Beacon is a boutique hotel in the heart of Boston. Pet beds and treats are de rigueur, and water bowls are refilled when house-keeping cleans your room. They also offer dog-walking and sitting, provided you book in advance. XV Beacon treats its human guests just as well, with complimentary in-town car service, wifi and overnight shoe shining, as well as the opportunity to rent an iPad to use in the hotel. That’s just inside the doors – the hotel is located in a beautiful historic part of the city that offers plenty to explore for dogs and humans alike. Check out XV Beacon for a luxurious urban experience for you and your pet.

Just one last bit before you go – traveling is not for every pet. Consider consulting with your vet prior to planning a trip with your pet, and making sure that your furry friend fits hotels and airlines size and breed restrictions.
