Bratislava, Slovakia: This town straddling the Danube dates back the Middle Ages. Bratislava’s historic city center makes for an excellent stroll but it only the beginning. Other popular attractions here include the Blue Church, the Mirabach Palace, the Castle, the National Art Gallery, and the UFO Observation Deck. Although Slovakia can be chilly during the winter, the country can also get very warm during the summer months. Therefore, spring probably is the best time to visit Bratislava, even if accommodation prices tend to be somewhat higher at such times. According to Price of Travel, budget travelers stopping here can still manage to get by on about $41 USD a day. This city can also serve as an inexpensive base for day trips to nearby Vienna.

Kotor, Montenegro: This lovely seaside town is home to well-preserved and highly photographic ramparts that provide an excellent view over the city. The city walls are open to the public at no additional cost from November to March, but cost about $3.50 USD at other times of the year. Visitors should note that steep stairs found here can be especially challenging during the warm and humid summer months. Those attempting the climb should be sure to wear shoes with good traction and bring bottled water along with them for the hike. Other fun things to do in Kotor include visiting the town’s historic churches and taking a boat tour of the local waterways. Plenty of beaches can also be found in the nearby vicinity. Dubrovnik is likewise only a short drive away.
