When we imagine staying in a château, we usually also imagine paying thousands of dollars for the pleasure. However, you can feel like royalty this year without going bankrupt, and we have 6 French châteaux you can stay in without breaking the bank:

Château de la Côte, nr Périgueux, Dordogne

This is château was built in the 15th century and has been continuously owned by the same family for the last century. Thing original stone walls, a real suit of armour, wood panelling and fireplaces you could sleep in. Rooms start from $208CAD.

Château d’Étoges, Marne, nr Epernay, Champagne-Ardenne

This tranquil castle was used by French Kings on their way east, and even has a moat. The grounds are spectacular, with ponds, lawns, and fountains, and the rooms are luxurious, featuring delicate linen and fabrics, antique furniture, and fresh flowers. The restaurant has its own fireplace, and you can even request breakfast in bed. Doubles start at $180CAD.

Château de Potelières, nr Avignon, Languedoc

If you like the sound of staying somewhere surrounded by orchards and olive groves, which are used to make homemade jams, this is the place for you. Think benches perfectly located under huge trees, a pool with parasols and loungers, hallways flooded with light and stone stairways waiting to be explored. Step into the dining room and you’ll find a front terrace where you can enjoy buffet breakfasts, or spend time in the scarlet salon, billiard room, music room or library. Stay here (with breakfast included) for $205CAD a night.

Château de Potelières, nr Avignon, Languedoc

Built just prior to the French Revolution, this elegant home had towers added to it in the early 20th century. With 18 hectares of parklands waiting to be explored, ancient trees, rolling hills, a river, a pool, lakes, woods, and farm animals, those who love the outdoors will be in heaven. See if you can get one of the bedrooms with windows on there sides, and enjoy this beautiful château from $180CAD a night.

Le Château, nr Lens, Pas-de-Calais

This château is located in its own private park, and was rebuilt in 1928 (replacing the château destroyed during WWI. History buffs will want to visit the Vimy War Memorial located close to the house, although there are plenty of other things to do, such as enjoying the gym or sauna. Bedrooms are impressive here, with pretty antiques, smart shutters and satin sheets, and the breakfast is outstanding- serviced with porcelain. Stay here for $220CAD a night for bed and breakfast.

Château les Oliviers de Salettes, nr Valence, Rhône Valley-Alpes

Three years of renovations have recently wrapped up here, and if you’re always wanted to stay in a place with real turrets, this is a must-visit. Wander through the fiv e hectares of parkland, swim in the infinity pool or get active with electric-bike rentals, wine tastings and cookery lessons. Double rooms begin at $185CAD a night.
