Istanbul, Turkey: The tourist hordes tend to vanish as summer wanes, leaving the streets in most European cities free of everyone but the locals. While Istanbul may not be as affordable as some other spots, it still has plenty of appeal to travelers. After all, Hagia Sofia, the Blue Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar are all popular places to stop in this bustling metropolis. Visitors to Istanbul may also want participate in a walking tour of the city or get squeaky clean at the local hamam. However, those coming here will definitely want to make hotel reservations in advance because finding last minute accommodation can still be a pricey gamble during the shoulder season.

By late September, the sticky summer heat has burned off and autumn begins to get underway in this coastal town. Temperatures naturally fluctuate but tend to hover around 79°F (26.5°C), which is still warm but not overly so. Pohkara, Nepal: This city makes a good base for participating in all the outdoor activities that the region has to offer. Three of the world’s highest mountains are located only a short distance away from the town and there are several lakes in the area. Numerous historic temples dot the region as well but travelers should keep in mind that many of these places are still fully functional religious sites and adjust their behavior accordingly. The 2015 Price of Travel index reports that visiting Pohkara will set budget-minded travelers back an average of only $20 per day. However, even great bargains may be found here during late September. The weather is also quite nice then too.
