How to Beat the Travel Blues

What are the travel blues? Sometimes, it can be a negative feeling while you are traveling. But this week’s topic is about travel blues at home. So what could that possibly mean?

Travel blues at home could be the feeling that you would rather be traveling than doing your everyday routine. As you slog through days at the office, you dream of wandering unknown city streets or jungle trails, with nothing but a bag of your few belongings for company. As you munch on your 4th lunch sandwich of the week, you imagine street food sizzling in Bangkok, morsels fresh, authentic, and unfamiliar. It’s hard, sometimes, just living your life when you know that some of your days are simply unremarkable. Long term travelers will also report feeling a bit set in routine once they have been on the road for a few months; the museums start looking all the same, and the sights don’t take your breath away like they did on the first day.

So, how do you beat this feeling down? Surely, we cannot jet off to unknown places every time we feel a little bored. They key, of course, is attitude. When you are craving the feeling you get when you travel, maybe you are just craving a new routine. Here are some ideas that might make your life a little more exotic and fun.

Take a weekend trip. Who said traveling was for those who can afford to take time off? Even if it’s just a Saturday morning hike, there’s always time for a little getaway just to help you break the routine. Some good weekend destinations out of Vancouver are Victoria, Whistler, and Seattle.

Cook an exotic meal. Sometimes, we can get in a rut of eating the same food every day. Try to cook something new! Either grab a recipe off the internet, or even take a cooking class for an authentic cooking experience. You will have a good time and may even meet some new people.

Try to do some fun activities in your home town. Do you know what museums are in your city? Have you been to any of them recently? What are the best tourist attractions in your city? Sometimes it’s fun to be an at-home tourist. I just tried stand-up paddleboarding in Vancouver for the first time and it was a blast.
